Covering Grey Hair

What to consider when colouring grey hair

This article summarises tips and tricks on how to best use natural hair colours and how they behave on white and grey hair.

Grey and white hair are difficult to colour due to lack of colour pigments. These tips can help you achieve optimal coverage.

Notes for your next order:

Blonde hair: To turn grey hair into blonde, hair dye manufacturers use yellow herbs like turmeric, mignonette, and others. However, it's important to note that dark areas of the hair will remain dark despite dyeing it with natural hair colour. To avoid any unpleasant surprises, it's recommended to use the blonde mixture immediately after mixing, as long as it doesn't contain henna, rubia, or any other plant dye that has a red or pink tone. If you have a product that contains these ingredients, it's crucial to read the enclosed description and ingredients list carefully.

Red hair: If you want to dye grey or red hair a bright red colour, the best method is to use henna or rubia.

Brown hair: If you have light hair and want to achieve a rich brown tone, it is recommended to apply henna twice. The best way to do this is to leave the henna on for 2 hours on the first day and then use a henna-indigo mixture the following day. This double application does not cause any damage to the scalp or hair, so it can be done in one day without any concerns. However, it is recommended to dye on two different days if possible. During this time, the scalp will be more relaxed, and the colour will set better.

Here are some suggestions for the right colour mix:

  • 50% indigo and 50% henna for medium-brown to reddish brown
  • 70% indigo and 30% henna for medium to dark brown
  • 80% indigo and 20% henna for dark brown

The more indigo is used, the darker the colour will be and vice versa.

Black Hair: Achieving black hair colour requires a lot of patience and dedication. It may take several attempts to get the desired result. For best results, it is recommended to apply henna for two hours first, followed by indigo for 2-3 hours the next day. If you have light to brunette hair, the black colour may be less intense than if only indigo was used.

Preparation and application:

It is recommended to use lukewarm water when preparing the dye, although some manufacturers suggest using hot water. Therefore, it's important to carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions and, ideally, use a hair dye thermometer to ensure the correct temperature.

After mixing the herbs, it's important to apply the paste immediately to clean, damp hair, especially when dyeing curly hair. If you prefer the traditional method, mix the henna with acidic juice, such as vinegar or lemon juice, and let it sit for 8 hours. On the other hand, indigo should be mixed with lukewarm water and baking soda and left for only about 15 minutes.

IMPORTANT:

When preparing or using colour and herbal mixtures, it is recommended to avoid using any greasy substances. It is crucial to ensure that all areas of the scalp are covered during the application. After dyeing, it is important to use mild products to clean the scalp to ensure that all residues are thoroughly removed.
